Autumn Break 2024 Pickering

The 2024 Autumn trip was in the North Yorkshire Moors, staying in the picturesque village of Pickering. It was a 4-night trip which was enjoyed by all who attended, judging by all the positive comments received. Accommodation was spread across a selection of hotels and cottages within Pickering as this was the best and cost-effective way of booking. We arranged to have our evening meals together at local hotels and restaurants as a group, which helped ensure that everyone felt included. For the subsequent evenings we ate at an Indian Restaurant, at the Manse Hotel, and at an Italian Restaurant for the last night.

After arriving on the Sunday we had an evening meal at the Best Western in Pickering. Everyone said that they enjoyed their meals. In the evening several people met to go to the local pub. The next 3 days included walks lead by group members and every day there was an option of a long walk and a shorter walk. The walks included Rosedale Abbey, Hutton le Hole, Goathland, the Hole of Horcum and Sutton Bank.

The first day’s weather was a dry sunny day with Tuesday being a little more inclement. However, the walk through the waterfall more than made up for the wet weather. There was an option to take a Heritage train from Pickering to Goathland which was the starting point for this walk. Goathland was re-named Aidensfield in the TV series Heartbeat and is a very interesting area to visit. The Wednesday was the wettest and those intrepid walkers doing the long walk braved the weather to the Hole of Horcum. Some of us opted to visit Whitby or York and enjoy some site-seeing and fish and chips instead.

The final morning, we did a shorter walk around Sutton Bank as we were returning home. Sutton Bank is part of the National Park and the site of many a battles between the Scots and the English. The weather was kind to us which was an added bonus.

Thanks to all the organisers, the walk leaders and everyone for making the event a success!
