Spring Walking Holiday 2026 at Porthcawl
Coastal Walking Holiday in Porthcawl
This enjoyable four-night walking holiday, organised by the group’s committee, was based at the comfortable Seabank Hotel, offering the perfect base to explore the beautiful South Wales coastline and countryside. 26 members of the group enjoyed this lovely spring break.
Welcome to Porthcawl
On arrival, the group set out on a short introductory walk to become familiar with Porthcawl. This traditional seaside town is known for its wide sandy beaches, scenic promenade, and relaxed holiday atmosphere. With its mix of coastal views and friendly charm, it provided an ideal starting point for the days ahead.
Favourable Weather
The holiday was blessed with predominantly sunny weather and occasional broken cloud, creating excellent walking conditions throughout. The only exception came on the morning of Day 2, when a brief 30-minute shower added a refreshing start before clearing for the rest of the day.
Walking Highlights
Day 1 – Llantwit Major The first full day featured two varied walks:
• A longer 10-mile route across open countryside, passing the historic St Donat's Castle, two striking lighthouses, and scenic stretches of coastal path.
• A second 7.1-mile walk taking in Col-huw and the ancient Castle Ditches.
Day 2 – Margam Country Park Both walks began within the beautiful grounds of Margam Country Park:
• A 9.7-mile walk offering sweeping views and diverse landscapes.
• A shorter 7.1-mile option, equally rich in natural beauty and scenery.
Day 3 – Ogmore-by-Sea Two walks explored this stunning coastal area:
• A 9-mile route which started out along the estuary, then crossing the River Ogmore via stepping stones where, unfortunately, we had a slippage. We then on to field paths, rounding off the walk via a luscious green cliff top grassy path.
• A 7.5-mile alternative highlights included the River Ogmore and the ruins of Dunraven Castle.
Return Journey Highlight
On Day 4, the journey home included a memorable stop for 12 members at Symonds Yat in the Forest of Dean. A relaxed 4-mile walk offered spectacular views across the Wye Valley, rounding off the trip perfectly with coffee and cake at a local café.
Comfort & Entertainment
Guests were once again well looked after by Alfa Hotels, who provided comfortable accommodation, excellent food, and attentive dining service. Evenings were rounded off with enjoyable entertainment, including a live vocalist and a friendly game of bingo.
This walking holiday combined scenic coastal routes, fascinating local landmarks, and warm hospitality—creating a thoroughly rewarding and memorable experience for everyone involved.
